Modifying Template

  • I’ve been using WordPress for a while and not had any problems I couldn’t figure out but I’m switching to a new host and have encountered a strange problem.

    I managed to set up WordPress OK on the new site but when I tried to modify the template I get the message:

    you cannot update that file, must make it writable, eg. chmod 666

    I find this odd as I never had to chmod anything before that I can recall.

    However I did chmod and still get the message despite refreshing, logging in and out, and all that.

    Count me confused, anyone else encounter this before? Any suggestions?

  • Maybe on this new server you need different permissions to be able to modify the files.

    me too, this is the same thing…..
    i installed wordpress and can click the “UPDATE FILE” button in the presentation

    now i moved to a new host; updated and installed everything successfully, but then can’t modify the template in the presentation area……there’s no “UPDATE FILE” button…….anyone could help and explain why this is happening?

    What is there ?
    You and WP may be looking at different files.

    well, login to your wordpress account as admin,
    then go to presentation-themes editor
    look at the right hand corner below: see a button: “update file”?
    well, can’t see this button in my new host!
    it use to work fine with my old host!

    You need to make the files writable (or see a Codex page on this). I’m sure instead of the Update button it says If this file was writable you could edit it. Or?

    On the old host the files had the right permissions to be writable. On the new hostthey do not “inherit” the old permissions, you have to make them writable (chmod 666 or whatever works better) on the new server.

    All the files you may want to edit. Everything in the current theme’s folder at least

    in the theme? change it too 666?

    i see……got it done! i changed the files inside the theme folder to 666
    but last time, 644, and everything is fine, why?

    plus, in the future, do i need to change everything to 666 instead of 644? thus it’ll be damn troublesome!

    644 means that the outside world (including WP) can only read the files, 666 (or 646) allows WP to write to the files so yes, unfortunately you have to change the permissions. But I’m sure you won’t have to do that very often. They should stick now that you’ve changed them (on this server, that is).
