Updating wordpress to a new version: Help

    I’m using wordpress version 2.9.2 and i want to upgrade it to a latest version.
    My question is:
    when I upgrade my wordpress to a new version like 3.1.3, what will be the effect to my old version of wordpress? is there any negative effects like losing of data?

    Just making sure before upgrading.. Thanks

  • Make sure first you back up both the database and the WP files. Yes, the potential for messing up your site does exist. Its not highly likely but its does exist.

    The most common cause is incompatibility from plugins whose author hasn’t updated them to the current version of WP. (Not all plugins require updating with each version upgrade). Its kind of a trial and error thing, so make sure you are all backed up and thus can revert in the unlikely event you find a problem.
