I just updated BackupWordpress and Twitter Goodies and my whole site crashed. Both plugins updated successfully and I got the “All updates have been completed” message.

    https://kimberlygerson.com/

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘&’, expecting T_VARIABLE or ‘$’ in /home/content/k/m/g/kmgerson/html/wp-content/plugins/backupwordpress/functions/backup.files.functions.php on line 148

How to fix this OR How to restore a backup would be greatly appreciated.

Am not a programmer. I normally do everything through the dashboard, but can follow instructions if you speak slooowwly ??

    Thanks, -Kim

  • FTP into your site (or use whatever file management application your host provides) and delete the wp-content/plugins/backupwordpress folder.

    That worked! Thanks! -K~

Also got a crash upon install of the new update … will revert to older version until a fix appears ??

    I’m back!

I tried to reinstall the plugin via the WordPress plugin dashboard. When I tried to activate it I got:

Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘&’, expecting T_VARIABLE or ‘$’ in /home/content/k/m/g/kmgerson/html/wp-content/plugins/backupwordpress/functions/backup.files.functions.php on line 148

So really the problem is unresolved.

BackUpWordpress requires PHP 5 as a minimum, it sounds like you must be using PHP 4.

You could try contact your hosts and asking them to upgrade you to PHP 5, it’s worth doing, the next version of WordPress (3.2) will require PHP 5.2 as minumum.

That’s funny. The reason I wanted to do a backup yesterday was because I am about to upgrade to PHP 5. Figured it would be smart to backup everything first.

Guess I’ll just go for it …

Thanks for getting back to me Tom.

I had the same issue, same error msg. Upgraded to PHP5 and that fixed it (as far as the BackupWordpress Plugin).
