• So, it seems like other solutions to 404 error on save don’t resolve this issue. Plus, I didn’t see anyone talk about WYSIWYG causing this issue.

I’ve deleted my post content and put just plain text (everything else is the same), it saved fine.

I’ve put my post content back in (few h3 tags, bunch of links, thats it) and it won’t save, gives me 404 error.

Does anyone have an idea why WYSIWYG cause 404 error for no reason?

    Thanks.

With no changes, just time (1 hr). It began working again. Go figure. Might be a bug.

Anyone could provide some info on this? It keeps coming back.

I’ve put my post content back in

And where did this post content come from if it wasn’t plain text?

The post content was written inside WP and it was causing 404 error. So I copy and pasted html into notepad and used just plain text, no links. Post saved fine. Then, I posted content back into WP from notepad and it caused 404 error.

    I hope that makes sense.

This issue is the exact issue reported by taffyc, but I wrote it up differently.

Is this happening on just 1 post or all posts?

It comes and goes, not tied to any specific posts. It shows up out of nowhere. Sometimes I get 404 error trying to update user profiles. Not sure if related.

Ahh. Speaking of the devil. It just showed up as I tried to save a new post.

That sounds like either a plugin/theme issue or a problem on your server.

What could cause it to come and go without any apparent changes? Any ideas? Having something to work with will help. Thanks a lot for your help.

It could be almost anything (although my money is on a server issue). Unfortunately intermittent errors are always the the hardest to track down. Do you have access to server error logs?

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s my server. I’m on shared one, not for long. Tired of poor service.

Going through error log for the domain, the error that shows up most of the time as far as I can see says:
WordPress database error MySQL server has gone away for query SELECT

But, latest one is on the 29… nothing for today yet.

Intermittent errors do suggest an overloaded server as a possible cause. The problems only appear when the server experiences high traffic or another site is consuming too much in the way of server resources.

WordPress database error MySQL server has gone away for query SELECT

    Translation: the server collapsed!

    nothing for today yet

An overloaded server won’t necessarily log any errors. In fact, it could even be yet another symptom of overloading.

I think you’re right, that might be the problem.
Looking into cPanel status page, server load has red exclamation mark.

Thanks for helping isolate this issue. Yet another big reason to leave my host.

No problem. I hope you find a better host soon. ??

I followed up with my host and they said there’s nothing wrong with the server, though the problem was there when I talked to them.

Why would post with plain text save/preview but when adding html (links, etc.) it starts giving 404 error from post page? It can be published using quick edit mode.
