I cannot make changes (text, HTML code) in the WordPress post editor box that will save on any posts published before today.
I CAN make changes (text, HTML code) in the WordPress post editor box that will save on any posts published today.

    What happened in between?

    2 things…

SQL problem: Last night my host, (hostgator) had a MySQL problem that took down my sites.
Wordpress upgrade: I upgraded today when I logged back in to the sites before adding some content.

My host doesn’t think it’s related to the SQL issue because I’m able to make changes to the new posts.

    Also:

I’ve disabled every single plug-in, problem is still present.
What’s weird is there’s one old draft post I can make and save changes to.
I have another site at the same wordpress level that does NOT have this problem.
I have a test site with the same content and theme and it DOES have the same problem. I changed the theme and the problem is still there.
I’ve redone the installation of WordPress, too, didn’t fix it.

    Also:
I discovered this issue when trying to add new images to old posts and make them the featured image as well insert them at the top of the post. What’s interesting is that the code that gets inserted in the post for the image disappears but the featured image stays and you can see the FI when viewing a page showing multiple posts by tag, category, home page, etc.

    Questions:
    1) Should I try a roll back to the previous version of Wordpess? Slightly horrified to try this..

    2) I know nothing about SQL… so for those who do, does it seem to you that this points to a SQL problem considering that’s the other variable here i.e. SQL caused these sites to go down 24 hours before this problem?

    3) Any suggestions for how else to troubleshoot?

THANKS people… this is my first post here.

  • At this point, my best suggestion would be to attempt to export your posts/pages (using the Tools -> Export menu in the admin area). Then, try setting up another instance of WordPress and import the info into it. Then, see if you can edit the old posts. If you can, the problem is most likely related somehow to the MySQL.

If that does work, perform a complete backup of your WordPress (database and files), delete all of your posts and pages, then try importing them back into your WordPress.

Thank you Curtiss. Great idea! I will try this and report back.

    Hi Curtis,

Here’s what I did and what happened:

Make a back up of my posts and pages using the wordpress export option. Also made backup of my home directory and thr wordpress sql user via my web hosting account (host gator.)

Created new WordPress install on a new TEST subdomain.
Imported everything, uploaded same theme – problem is NOT present.

Deleted all posts from actual site.
    Imported all posts, pages, etc.
Only 34 out of 197 came through. The rest were received with “this post XXX already exists.”

Went to the Trash in WordPress and restored all my posts.

    Problem is still present.

Any ideas on what to do next?

Again, many thanks for your time and help on this.

Does this sound like a problem the SQL database to you?

Would it make sense to do a restore of the SQL database for this WordPress user if my host has a copy of it before the SQL server went haywire a couple days ago i.e. before these problems surfaced?

Also, is that an inherently risky proposition? I know nothing about SQL so I’m frightened at tampering with it.

    RESOLVED.

I went into my cpanel, looked at the SQL options, saw something to check the SQL database, it found an error, and then I ran the repair, and BOOM, problem is solved.

    Yea!

    Thank god.

Thank you for your assistance Curtis.

Glad you were able to get it solved.
