I’m thinking it would be nice if plugins at periodic times checked themselves against whatever the plugin author has labelled the “current version” and upgraded. Of course, the idea that your plugin might change behavior will annoy many of you, but a responsible plugin author would only be using it for bugfixes. That said, my question is, what is a secure way of implementing an autoupdate feature?

  • Are you talking about plugins being able to “update themselves”?

While it is currently broken, the One Click Plugin Manager at https://www.wp-plugins.net automatically checks for updates when you run the plugin manager. Adding auto-update features to a plugin is fairly complicated business and may bulk up a code.

It’s a nice thought but since volunteers create these plugins, this might be a lot to ask. Maybe in the future.
