• Hi,

I’m several versions behind because I keep getting stuck when I try and upgrade. Apparently some of my files need to be made writable but I don’t know which ones. I have experiemented with making various ones writable but I end up with my images not showing or other odd errors.

    Can anybody help?

  • That’s not a lot to go on. We need to see the exact messages you get.

    Hi Esmi,

    I get this message:

    Task Name: getlatestfiles
Task Description: Downloads / Uploads the latest files for wordpress
    Task Status: Failed
    Task Start Date: 2011-04-11 09:18:16
    Task End Date: 2011-04-11 09:18:17
Task Log: Starting to download the file from
Could not write to local file

Have you installed any plugin thats meant to update wordpress? If so deactivate the plugin and try again. Also try deactivating all the plugins and then moving on to the update.I think this can solve your issue.:)

    Hi,

I’ve managed to upgrade at last, phew. Thanks!

I still seem to have an issue with writable files though. When I try and upload an image I get this message:

Unable to create directory /home/livsim1/public_html/faregos.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

Which one is the parent directory and what do I need to do to make it writable?

Nice! ?? Its a very simple error you’re getting! To get over with this, just navigate into the wp-content directory.Make a new folder called “uploads”.If you already have this folder check inside and make a folder called 2011 and another one called 04 .And if this isnt still working change the uploads folder and it’s subdirectories’ permission to 755.This should work..
Check it out and tell me if it works!

No – don’t create the folders inside wp-content. WordPress should do that. Change the permissions on the wp-content directory to 766. If you still have problems, try 767, 775 or 777. Once your uploads are working, change the permissions on wp-content back to 755 again and check that everything still works OK.

WordPress does create the folders by itself but i strangely didnt have them during my recent 3.1.1 installation.

Right, I’ve made a folder called 2011, and one called 04 (which I assume goes in the 2011 one).

The uploads folder is 0755, as is 2011 and 04. The other folder in uploads is 2010 which is also 0755.

    I’ve tried again but get:

“DSC00928.JPG” has failed to upload due to an error
Unable to create directory /home/livsim1/public_html/faregos.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

    I don’t understand ??

A directory is the same as a file right?

    Thread Starter Hermiony

    (@hermiony)

I mean the same as a folder.

Ok now change the file permissions of the uploads folder and its sub folders to 777.Try and see..

    (@hermiony)

I’ve done that also now and I’m getting the same error message.

I do also have eshop files as a subdirectory of uploads, which I haven’t changed to 777 as I’m worried about what might happen. Should I change those too?

The only other folder I have in there is 2010. I’ve changed it and the contents to 777.

Should I change the permisiions for wp-content to 777?

Hmmm don’t change it to 777 then i guess. It might cause security problems..If you changed the permissions from ftp try changing it from cpanel. This might be causing it.

change the permissions for uploads and all the folders in it to 0755 from the cpanel this time.

You know, I didn’t know there was any other way of doing it except in cpanel, so that’s where I’ve been doing it. What’s the other way?

Sorry esmi, I missed your reply back there, just seen it.
