[Plugin: PhotoContest Plugin] Newsletter signup checkbox or ban!

  • I am having terrible problems with my newsletter signups via the competition. A rule of entering my competition is that your are automatically signed up to our email newsletter.

    Even though I have this rule (in caps!) on my introduction text, AND on a comp rules page, which is linked from the comp page, customers are reporting my newsletter as spam via mailchimp. A little investigation shows me this is from customers who have entered into my competition.

    So is there a way to add a checkbox (required field) to the ‘photo upload’ that simply says ‘I agree to receive email newsletter’? And if they uncheck the box they cannot upload photos?

    It would be good to be able to turn this required field on/off via admin as I am sure some people may not require it.

    Any advice appreciated before I get banned from sending legit emails to my customers! Or unfortunately it is just to risky to use the comp plug, which would be a real shame.

    Yeah I have this problem too. would be great to have a ‘required’ checkbox that people have to click when uploading. just means we have ‘proof’ that customer agreed to receive newsletter even if they mark as spam.

    It is actually the law to have an ‘opt-in’, certainly in the UK anyway. Many people use competitions for building up a mailing list so it really is a must for any competition

    If you want something like this; Set the voting and upload role to subscriber.
    Then you force the user to register to your website (using the default wp or some other plugin to handle the registering)

    I am not willing to include something like this in my plugin. Others are handling this a lot better then i can!!!! But feel free to add it yourself and post me the changes. I will include it into the next release.

    Note: i am currently working on a version where users can change the upload form and all formelements will be saved into the database. Create a checkbox, add js validation and your are all set!! This version won’t be out before May 2011!!

    This is how we’re doing it with MailChimp. We are having contestants complete the optin form that we embed with MailChimp’s code. Then rather than the standard “Thank You” page we redirect them to the upload page. So the setup is via MailChimp. You just need to know the page ID for the upload page in WP. Hope this helps.
