Host disallows htaccess – any suggestions

  • Hi – Im new here – looking to try WP.
    My host doesnt allow htaccess usage for security reasons. They implement a different method. So htaccess results in a forbidden error.
    Ive read a little on htaccess on the posts here but non seems to address what to do if you cant use it – any pointers please before I get into trying to install and make it work ?? —

    hmmm – I think I see, but this is getting into tech territory Im unsure about. Im about to try an install for “fun” and will soon see.
    As I understand it tho htaccess is created on install and in the past – this sort of this has crashed the site ??
    Ah well – lets see. Got the FTP up just incase I have to undo it all ??

    OK Ive got it running and I can add posts.
    However I obviously dont have something right and it may be due to
    1/ Im a newbie wally and havent done something right
    2/ problem with htaccess setup (using without)
    I get a 404 error when trying to open a category even tho I created and wrote to it. I placed the index.php at the front of the struct as suggested.
    Its an apache server running php but there is (I understand) a block on htaccess
    Any clues ??

    I take it all back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    It works.
    Had the cat base incorrect – I need to understand it better but all seems well to this point.
    Sorry for the hassles & thanks for the pointers earlier.

    I don’t want to sound blantly obvious here or make a shameless plug. However, I’ve never had a problem with the more important parts of hosting at the link below and one of the best things I can say about them is WordPress is a part of their site install. You can just click on the install button at their hosting site and have WordPress up and running in seconds not minutes. All options of mod_rewrite are allowed there. Not bad for $6.00 a month.
