[Plugin: Buddypress] installation error

Just learned about Buddypress and it is exactly what I need.
unfortunately, I cannot seem to install it on my site.

I keep getting a whole mess of these errors:
Warning: Call-time pass-by-reference has been deprecated; If you would like to pass it by reference, modify the declaration of apply_filters(). If you would like to enable call-time pass-by-reference, you can set allow_call_time_pass_reference to true in your INI file in mysite.com/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums.php on line 193

searching for that error produced this page:

I tried to work with the solutions suggested there, and, like the original poster, had no success.
