Hi folks, was wondering if you could help me.

Before i updated to 3.1 videos would be automatically embedded if i put the link to a youtube video in a post or page. I also use a plugin called external videos on my site which worked fine.

Now all i get is the link to the youtube page…

The setting in “Media” is enabled.

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

    Cheers, Paul

You don’t need any embed plugins. See Embeds.

External videos isnt really an embed plugin. It creates video galleries from youtube authors that you specify.

I mentioned it because how it works is it simply posts a link to a youtube video in a new post. This DID embed the video automatically, but now all i get is the url to the page on youtube rather than it being embedded.

    For and example see here

I usually follow the precedure in the link you gave, if i do this now all i get is a hyperlink to the youtube page.

    Hope this makes sense

It sounds like your plugin isn’t compatible with WP 3.1. Have you tried contacting the plugin’s developer?

    Yes, currently in this thread

Would the plugin not being compatible cause normal posts to not embed videos??

This is just a standard post with the text “https://www.youtube……”

Does the explicit embed code work?

    [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0[/embed]

No…. although it returns a slightly different result in that the url is now a hyperlink

Try disabling plugins. If something else is horking up embeds, that could cause this.

It’s also possible that your site can’t contact YouTube for some reason. The way embeds work is that your site goes and connects to YouTube to get the embed code from them to use. If that fails for whatever reason, you get the link.

Ok I have de-activated EVERY plugin on my site and the problem is still the same.

So i guess its on to the “my site cannot contact youtube” question…

Any suggestions on where to look first?? I have checked server error logs and nothing stands out. I tried reloading the page a few times noting the time and there is definately nothing logged at those times.

Sorry for the double post, but i have discovered something else which is a little strange.

If i put the youtube url on the first line of a post it will not work. However if I press the enter key first, and put the link on the second line and post it, it works.

This post https://www.anglingaddicts.co.uk/2000/uncategorized/video-embed-test/ in HTML looks like this…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOCTE1XA-DQ

    URL using embed BBcode
    [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOCTE1XA-DQ[/embed]

The first one doesnt work, the second and third work, and the Embed bbcode one doesnt work!!

Obviously “external videos” puts the link on the first line which is why it wont work

    Massively confused now!!!

Does anyone have any ideas on where to start looking to fix this??

Really could do with getting to the bottom of this…

Is there ANYTHING i could look at to try to find the root of this problem??

Well, why not just go with the most obvious solution: don’t put youtube links on the first line of a post.

If only it was that simple. This problem, whatever it is, is breaking one of my plugins.

I have managed to sort a work around for part of it, but this isnt fixing the actual problem. And my video galleries wont embed because of it.

Its not any plugins causing it as i have tried disabling every plugin, and i have changed the theme. The issue is still there.

I have also tried re updating wordpress….
