How do I creat a page similiar too this one?

The first one looks like a very standard blog theme, with a right-hand sidebar, header image, and black background … the artwork is very original, but that has nothing to do with the theme. There is nothing special or unusual about the theme.

So how would I do the buttons and everything? So is everything just made black?
