I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out why I am getting a 28px margin at the top of my pages… I finally tracked it down to the admin-bar.php file.. There is a function (_admin_bar_bump_cb) that prints an inline style that adds a margin to the html body. I am not sure what the point of this is, but it really should not be there. Unfortunately I wasted almost a full days work trying to figure it out. Hopefully this post will save others that pain.

It’s not that. I mean, it is, but it shouldn’t be doing that.

Do you have wp_head() and wp_footer() called in your theme?

Yes, I have both. When I removed the wp_head from my template, that fixed the problem. But I wanted to keep wp_head.. The only place I could trace that style to was the admin-bar.php page.

What else would have caused that to happen?

If it’s throwing your theme out of whack, make sure you have a call to wp_footer() in your theme’s footer. The next cause for that is your theme’s css having a conflict. Actually, I have been having the same problem, and I’m pretty sure it is the 3.1 admin shortcut bar. As such, it won’t bother visitors to your site, but I started a thread on it here, and will post any progress I make on it there.

Thanks Getzel. I agree… it has something to do with the admin bar, but it is very bothersome. I appreciate the extra info – I will read your thread.

I should have asked: are you running a multisite installation, or can we cross that off the list of possible culprits?

Thanks for this post – in my case I was in fact missing wp_footer(). Rookie mistake.
