I had the site up and running. I was making some changes, and it suddenly started loading the home page when I try to go to the admin page. I have tried uninstalling WordPress completely, and re-installing. If I put it in the root directory of the site, the same thing happens, if I install it elsewhere it works fine. I even removed the directory completely from my server, and re set up the domain. Same result. I am completely dumbfounded. Any ideas?

    Have you tried:

    – checking through Troubleshooting WordPress 3.1 – Master List

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

I can’t even get into the admin page to deactivate any plugins. I literally deleted everything, and started from scratch. It makes no sense.

talbotini – Look at esmi’s post. She tells you HOW to turn off plugins via FTP or phpMyAdmin (it’s her 4th item on the list).

I followed the instructions. When I got the the point where you login to the admin page, it was clear it was still not working. I don’t think you understand, I literally deleted every single file on the website directory, and started with a fresh install of WordPress with no contents, or plugins.

When I go to the root/wp-admin page, I am prompted for a password as usual, but then after entering the password my home page loads with the usual blank twenty ten template with Hello World post. There is no admin toolbar, and when I click on the login link in the side bar, it refreshes the page.

If I install the WordPress files in a sub-directory it works as normal.

I searched a good while in the forum, and couldn’t find anything like this. Sorry, I am not trying to waste anyones time. I really have exhausted every idea I have had.

Talbotni, sounds like an htaccess error. Did you delete that as well, when you deleted “everything”?

Terry, make a new topic, please.

I am not sure what htaccess is. I use the same hosting account for a two different WordPress web sites, so it is an add-on domain within the same server. One is brianjtalbot.net, which I haven’t done anything with yet, the other is mattsride.org. The mattsride.org root directory is within the brianjtalbot.net directory. When I couldn’t fix the problem, I first uninstalled WordPress, and re-installed it in the mattsride.org directory. Same problem. Then I completely erased the mattsride.org directory, and re set it up, then installed WordPress. Same result. Could it be something outside of the root directory causing it even though my other WordPress site is still working normally?

Also the log in page looks like un-styled HTML now, instead of pretty WordPressness, if that tells you anything.

Hmnn it is apparently the server at WP was down temporarily.
It is now up & running already….whew…being newbie, I thought I’ve had it:)

Has it been up and down?

talbotini – .htaccess is a HIDDEN file in your server that controls the pretty formatting of URLs. Look for it. I betcha it;’s there ??

Given than you’re using add-on domains and all, you may have to set things up differently. I would ask your HOST how to do it right, since I’m not familiar with your particular setup.

That said https://mattsride.org/?p=1 seems fine to me.

It started working again last night with apparently no change, and then stopped again. I found the .htaccess files, there are several. What should I do with them?

Several? You should only have one in the same location as your wp-config.php file (rename them old.htaccess for now).

Though… if it started working and then stopped, I’d ask my host or check the error logs. SOunds like a sever hiccup.

    Thread Starter talbotini

    (@talbotini)

There is none in the same location as the wp-config.php file. The other ones are in a series of files named _vti_bin, etc… outside the mattsride.org root directory.

Ah, don’t worry about those, then.

.htaccess is, however, what controls your pretty permalinks, so those will never work without that file. I don’t think we’re gonna worry about it. The site looks fine to me. I would check the sever’s error logs, since it IS working now. You may have some server side caching going on that took time to catch up.
