• Hi there. I have two wordpress blogs which I need to merge. I went gone to the old one and exported it as an xml file. Then I went to the new blog (which already had posts on it) and imported the file. I chose to map the posts to the existing users (because they’re all the same anyway) and selected to upload all links/ files etc. Then it appeared to import successfully; the list of imports appeared and my browser said ‘Done’. But when I viewed the blog and looked in the Posts, nothing had changed. The posts from the old blog have not been added to the new one. Am I missing a stage or does this sound like a bug?
    Thanks.

Are the posts in the database?

    Thanks for the reply.
…I don’t know. How do I find out? Shouldn’t the import function automatically add the posts to the database for me?

yes it should, but it sounds like they didn’t get imported. If you have cpanel or similar it should give you access to phpmyadmin (or similar..), check your database there.

Let’s assume they didn’t get imported! What’s the solution? The import gets as far as generating the list of things ‘importing’ and then just stops.

erm, no. Until you have checked the database we don’t know what has happened. Although it is likely the posts aren’t there, we need to know for sure.

I’m having a similar problem. The tags import, but not the posts or media. When I look in the database, it seems to have a file for the posts, but when I open the file I only see the tags. If I open the XML file with an editor, I see the tags but no post content(should I even see the content here?) I have tried the WP exporter, but I don’t have an export button on the page. I used the Advanced Export plugin to even get this far. Everything else sounds exactly like what’s happening to flourishrob. Hope it’s ok to join on this post for help since it sounds almost the same. If not I can start a new one for myself.

The more the merrier! It seems crazy that Exporting from one WordPress blog and then importing to another WordPress blog should be so difficult!
FYI Rich ‘elfin’ Pedley, I’ve managed to check the database and the new posts aren’t there!
    Thanks.

    Ok step 2.

Check that the xml file does contain the necessary data.
and silly question, have you tried to import again?

    Thread Starter flourishrob

    (@flourishrob)

As far as I can tell the xml file contains the data. When I import it starts the process and generates a list of stuff it’s importing. I have tried to import several times. When I try immediately it tells me that all the files already exist. If I try in a new session it just stops as before. ??

see if anything on this page helps: Importing Content

Not really! It’s just telling me to do what I’ve already done…

Ok just to confirm – you’ve used the standard WordPress export, and the standard WordPress import – not via any third party plugin?

Additionally check your sites error logs, see if there is anything in there at the time you tried your import.

I’m out of ideas, I’ve tagged the thread so that someone else might pick it up.

Would you be able to post a link to an example export file that is failing?

Also can I confirm this is WordPress version 3.0.1 (are both sites running the same version? if not what versions are they?) with wordpress-importer 0.2.

Would you be able to try the development version (0.3-beta7 at time of posting) of the importer, see if that makes a difference for you.

(Thanks Rich for tagging the thread).
