how to remove /wordpress from my url

I have tried to remove the /wordpress from my site url in several ways. The most recent crashed the site. it appears https://www.mydomain.com/wordpress. This also does not allow search to find the site. I have recently re-designed the site in xammp. The files are stil in a folder called wordpress and I am afraid when I upload it to my server I will have the same problem. I tried to change the name of the folder to “mydomain”
but that seems to have broken a bunch of links. Anybody have solutions or advice??
