[Plugin: Relevanssi – A Better Search] Relevanssi Load Issues on our Servers

    Great plugin. It really helps WPs search results come out and show better. We’re having a couple load issues that have started up once we got this plugin going though.

    Our site is very heavily based on search results. Almost every user lands on or ends up searching for something.

    Are there any effective methods of further caching and optimizing Relevanssi? We’ve added as many relevant “Stop Words”, and installed caching scripts like W3 Total Cache to work along side it.

    Aside from any suggestions, we are also willing to have a more custom version of Relevanssi developed to work better with our sites specifically.

    There’s nothing that can be done now, but it would be very simple to add a caching mechanism to Relevanssi. I’ll take a look at it. If you could drop me an email (mikko at mikkosaari.fi), I could let you test it.

    Well, it’s not very simple, but not difficult either. Right now I’m looking at two ways of caching: cache the search results and excerpts (making excerpts takes a while).

    I’d love to cache the whole search, but that didn’t work out like I expected, because the search modifies $wp_query, and I couldn’t get that to work. Still, caching the results from relevanssi_search() and the excerpts should make active searches lighter on the CPU.

    i get load issues too. A caching mechanism (by plugin and maybe built-in cache) seems doesn’t resolve the load problems, because there are millions combination of search term. In my experience, caching mechanism created more burden on the server (i was using W3 total cache).the only solution now is to deactivated the plugin during peak hours.

    Disabling excerpts is one thing that helps, I think that’s something that can cause heavy load on server.

    Caching helps or not, depending on how much you get repeated queries.
