Comment option has disappeared on blog posts

  • I posted a new post last night (Click Here) and today noticed the option to comment is no longer available. I checked all other posts and no comments are displayed as they used to be. Comments are still in my database when I look from the admin console.

    Steps I’ve tried but comments are still not showing up.

    1. Checked the Settings->Discussion and “Allow people to post on new articles” was not enabled. I enabled and saved.

    2. Checked the individual post that I posted last night and comments were NOT enabled. I enabled and saved.

    3. Checked previous individual posts and comments were all enabled but the comments are not showing on the page.

    I’ve had this site live for over a year and posts have had the comment option up until today. Not sure what I did to turn them off. This particular post is getting a lot of traffic compared to my previous posts and I would LOVE to have the comments option available.

  • Did you recently switch to a new theme or update the theme you’re using?

    Have you checked the individual posts to make sure that “Allow Comments” is checked?

    Have you checked your Settings -> Discussion settings to ensure that “Automatically close comments on articles older than ___ days” is not checked and set to some low number of days?

    Thank you for responding.
    No, haven’t changed themes
    Yes, checked individual posts and Allow Comments is checked on all
    Yes, checked Settings -> Discussions setting and the Auto close comments is NOT enabled.
    Still not working.

    Very strange. Can you try switching the theme to Twenty Ten to see if that fixes the problem? If so, then something must have gotten messed up in your theme files.

    Hi Curtiss,
    Here’s what I found out from my web designer. I had asked her to remove the notification that shows how many comments per post at the top of the page because sometimes the number was quite low, not something I wanted to highlight.

    Apparently, she removed all ability to leave a comment. So, she did remove code and will be putting code back in. Not sure when she’ll get to it so do you have any idea what code she would have removed and what needs to be put back? I’m guessing it’s somewhere in the comments.php file.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

    It looks like you got it fixed. Sorry I couldn’t help more; but I’m glad you were able to find and correct the issue.

    You’re so kind to follow up. Yes, it was fixed earlier this afternoon. I’m not sure how but my web designer knew exactly what to do. She has apparently deactivated the comments in the code somewhere, there was a bit of a mix up with communication. No worries, it’s fixed. ?? All is well.
