[Plugin: WP Bit.ly] Made my server hang, had to reboot

    I did this;

    1. Installed and activated the plugin
    2. Entered my bit.ly credentials
    3. Found the Get Shortlink button missing from the post edit page
    4. Went to WP bit.ly settings and hit the “Generate Links” button” at which point the site just hung…
    5. Checked my other sites (same server) to find they were hanging too
    6. Checked my CPU usage which had shot up to more than double it’s usual levels
    7. Rebooted the server
    8. Uninstalled WP bit.ly

  • What version of WordPress are you running?

    The “Get Shortlink” button should not be “missing” from the Post edit screen.

    Do you have cURL enabled on your server?

    What did your error logs say?

    As the post says, WP v3.04.

    The Get Shortlink button is available when the plugin is de-activated.

    I have cURL enabled.

    I haven’t looked at my error logs.

    That’s a new one. I’ve never heard of the “Get Shortlink” button disappearing when the plugin is activated…

    By the way, if you have several posts, it might not be advisable to use the “Generate Links” button; as it goes through every post in your database, and conducts a URL transaction for each using the bit.ly API, it can be rather time- and server-intensive.

    Yep that was my guess. I’d suggest that that’s bad practice for any plugin as you never know how many posts a blog will have and what damage it might cause.

    When I hit that button I said to myself, “surely they’ve not built it to loop through every single post?!”

    Alas, that was the case and even posts from over two years ago were hit which makes little sense.

    Got bitten by the same bug ?? I can’t even find a way to stop it, as I’m constantly getting ‘RATE LIMIT EXCEEDED’ errors from Bit.ly now ?? Any help in this would be much appreciated.

    @djr Removing the files from your plugins folder will stop it running. WordPress will automatically de-activate it as soon as you fire up the dashboard, too.
