Page Number for Archives

I have search all over the forum for this but I have not yet found a solution.

When a site has a large amount of posts, it is a pain to browse through the archives with only having the ability to browse using the next and previous links. Is there a way to show the number posts and also the number of pages there are in the archive at a determined year or month?

The author uses a heavily modified version of WordPress but it is hard to figure out what exactly he did to build this feature.

Having in mind I’m not a php programmer, is there an easy way to add this functionality to WordPress?
