    Hello everyone,

We are no longer able to display files as we are receiving a 403 error. As soon as we rename the .htaccess file in the dlm_uploads folder, everything works again. Our .htaccess file has always contained the recommended code (https://download-monitor.com/kb/htaccess-code/), we have not made any changes – what is the problem here and how can we fix it?

    Best regards
    Kay

    Hello @kay269,

The 403 error you’re seeing is expected behavior and aligns with the documentation you referenced. This status code is intended to protect the contents of the dlm_uploads folder, ensuring its security.

I’d like to ask if any changes have been made to your server configuration recently. For instance, one reason you might have been able to access files in the past is if your server was running on Nginx and the protective rule wasn’t included in the server’s configuration.

Please let us know if this might be the case or if you have additional details about your setup.

    Warmly,

    Cristina

    Hi @cristinnaiulia,

There were no changes made to the server configuration from our side recently. But I had to re-install the plugin because it was removed automatically (I don’t know why).

What happens if we remove the htaccess-file? Our uploads would no longer be protected?

    Best regards,
    Kay

    Hello?@kay269,

If the .htaccess file is deleted, the contents of the dlm_uploads folder won’t be protected anymore. This code effectively blocks access to the contents of the folder, ensuring that only authorized requests are permitted. If you have any other questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out!

    Warmly,

    Cristina

    Hello @cristinnaiulia,

Thank you for an answer – basically my original question remains: What can I do so that we can access our downloads again without 403 errors?

    Kind regards,
    Kay

    Hello?@kay269,

Please check if you have set the redirect to file download option for your downloads. If it has always worked this way without issues, it means that previously you didn’t have the .htaccess file in that folder or the restrictions weren’t properly configured.
If this approach works for you, you can either delete the .htaccess file or just remove the code inside it, depending on your preference.

    Warmly,

    Cristina
