group shows in email even if not selected

I can confirm that the [group] elements are currently broken. they are all displayed in the frontend form and the email. Maybe since the last update

Edit: After deactivate then re-activate the plugin, the error is gone for us

No, the latest version is broken and trigger an error for a missing class.

@abrowet would it be advisable to use the previous version then?

You need to make sure to activate your plugin manually after updating from version 2.5.4

The snippet I put in the tool at the link you gave me is the code on step two of my three-step form. Please let me know if you want me to put all three steps of my form in your tool.

I’ve indeed restore a previous version of the plugin from a weekly snapshot on our server.

Re-activation of the plugin did not solve anything on our side, php errors started to pop in the logs.

The form you shared is working fine, no errors there. However, the problem is likely that you are using the multistep plugin in conjunction with Conditional Fields.

Due to the complexity of the Conditional Fields plugin it’s not possible to guarantee compatibility with other third party CF7 extensions. Most of the simpler extensions that follow best practices will work fine with Conditional Fields, but more advanced features like multistep, repeaters, calculated fields, etc. are too complex. As a solution for this we developed Conditional Fields Pro, which adds builtin support for multistep forms and repeaters which are guaranteed to keep working with each update.
