Read More on Every Other post

I have my blog set to show the first 55 words or so of a post, but it’s showing the complete first and thirds posts, and putting the “continue reading” link on the send and fourth posts. I’ve tried switching my template and even looked at another wordpress installation I have but it’s the same story. Any thoughts on how I can correct this?
