I’ve had a few customers tell me they weren’t happy about having to create a PayPal account during Checkout when they’re actually trying to pay by credit card as a guest. Apparently, the checkout process tries to funnel them into signing up for a PayPal account. The image links illustrate this and it’s easy to see their confusion.

Is there a way to have the “Save info and create PayPal account” toggled to Off by default? That is would be so helpful.

During Checkout, when customers click on the Debit or Credit Card button, this is what they see next:

The heading says “Create a PayPal Account” and they’re required to enter their email. This understandably causes hesitation because they now think they’re creating a PayPal account. My concern is cart abandonment at this point.

If they feel adventurous and actually enter their email, they then proceed to enter their payment details, etc. After that, some customers might not realize they need to toggle off the “Save info & create your PayPal account”. Instead, they notice the “Create Account & Pay Now” button. Again, possible cart abandonment and customer frustration or confusion. This is what they see:

To make things worse, when a customer does in fact toggle off the “Save info…”, this is what they’re hit with next:

A large blue button to “Create Account & Pay Now” and in smaller font to “Continue as Guest”. Why do customers have to constantly be on guard to avoid accidentally creating a PayPal account? They just want to get through what should be an easy Checkout process.

I’m really hoping there’s a way to have that “Save info” slider toggled by default to OFF. Perhaps I missed it in my settings. If it were by default Off, customers would immediately see a clear, no fuss “Pay Now” button like this:

    Hello @jwest444

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns.

PayPal does determine whether a buyer is eligible for guest payments, but you can change the PayPal account optional setting in your account under Account Settings > Website payments > Website preferences to allow more users to pay without creating a PayPal account. This can help minimize the instances where customers feel forced into creating an account.

However, it’s important to note that when features like PayPal Vaulting are enabled, PayPal will require buyers to create an account even for standard card payments. If you prefer not to have your customers worry about creating a PayPal account when paying by card, the best solution would be to sign up for Advanced Card Processing. This option never requires a PayPal account for card payments and could simplify the checkout process for your customers.

The plugin itself does not control whether PayPal requires an account. This depends both on your PayPal merchant account settings (for example, if PayPal account optional is off) and on an eligibility check performed by PayPal. So, for one buyer, PayPal may not require creating an account, while another buyer may be prompted to create one. PayPal is in full control and judges the “guest buyer eligibility” based on various factors, but it’s all happening outside of the scope of the plugin itself, so there is no plugin setting to controll this.

I understand this situation can lead to customer confusion and frustration, and I hope the above steps help to alleviate this.

    Kind Regards,

    Krystian

Thanks for the explanation. My settings for PayPal account optional is “On”. My understanding is this setting to On will allow debit/credit cards OR PayPal (not just PayPal).

I’ll disable Vaulting and experiment some more. I just want to get rid of those persistent PayPal account creation prompts (I’ve come across even more versions of them while trying to solve this issue.)

It’s just so frustrating because I’m having to reassure some customers that they don’t have to create accounts. Furthermore, I’ve had to walk a few of them through the payment gateway because they want to make sure they’re doing it right.

I don’t understand why the process changed. It was so simple before for customers to use debit/credit cards. If disabling Vaulting simplifies the process, I’ll let you know. Thanks again.

UPDATE: I disabled Vaulting and enabled Advanced Card Processing and activated it on PayPal by clicking on the documentation link. At first, that seemed to do the trick as far as immediately allowing customers to enter their debit/credit card info without leaving the checkout page.

However, during a test purchase on the live site (not Sandbox), I keep getting a spinning circle on a white overlay on the page. It never processes and I’ve tried several different purchases using different credit cards.

I’ve cleared my wordpress cache as well as my server cache, cleared sessions, etc.

Interestingly, the pay by Venmo option worked perfectly fine. So it seems this is a debit/credit card issue. I haven’t yet tried paying using a PayPal account for payment.

ANOTHER UPDATE: I think I got it sorted out. I did another live test paying by credit card and it went through. Not sure exactly what finally pushed it through, but I’m going to continue testing a few more times. I’ll come back here and mark this as Resolved once I complete further testing…

FINAL UPDATE: Well, I finally figured it all out. Disabled Vaulting, activated Advanced Card Processing. Then in PayPal settings, I actually disabled PayPal Account Optional.

Now on the Checkout page, customers can select the radio button for Pay by PayPal or Pay by Debit/Card. If they choose Debit/Credit, the payment info fields display on the same page with the Pay Now button. Very easy and convenient to not have to leave the page.

If customers choose to pay by PayPal, there’s one button at the bottom (unless Venmo also appears). This takes you to a pop-up window and the customer can either sign in with their PayPal account or create one.

Now, the reason I had to disable PayPal Account Optional is that previously when customers clicked the PayPal button, the pop-up window allowed them to sign in to PayPal (or create an account) AND the option to Pay by Debit or Credit Card. That was confusing because they already had that option on the Checkout page!

Also, more importantly, before I disabled PayPal Account Optional, the Order Confirmation (Thank You) Page kept appearing on the same PayPal pop-up window and not closing. Therefore, after final payment, customers were seeing 2 open tabs. The first tab was the Checkout page from my store and the second tab was my store’s Order Confirmation that PayPal pop-up window redirected to. This occurred on mobile and desktop on Safari and Chrome browsers. After disabling, the pop-up window closes after payment and now only the Order Confirmation appears on my site.

I hope some of this info helps others. I used PayPal Standard for 13 years without issues, so this was quite a learning curve.

Is there a way to hide the pay with PayPal option and only let users use the credit / debit card feature of Advance card processing.

Credit or debit cards at 1.2%.

Using a PayPal account jumps to 2.9%.

i would like to know how to hide or disable the option to let them use a PayPal account.

    Thanks

    Hello @dilwsi

Thank you for reaching out. To hide the “Pay with PayPal” option and allow users to pay only with credit or debit cards using Advanced Card Processing, please follow these steps:

    1. Disable Smart Buttons:
Go to your WordPress dashboard, navigate to PayPal Payments settings. In the Standard Payments tab, uncheck all options in “Smart Button Locations“.

By implementing these changes, customers will only see the credit/debit card payment option, aligning with your preferred transaction fee structure.

If you need further assistance, feel free to ask.

    Kind Regards,

    Krystian

    Hi there,
Thanks for the reply. I have followed your steps and can now see that the buttons no longer appear.
    Although text still appears.
I have added a screen shot here to show you : https://img.baluprint.com/d2giz.png

How to we remove this from the payment screen and just have the option for cards.

    Thanks again

    Hello @dilwsi

This could be due to a theme or plugin conflict, or potentially a caching issue. To resolve this, I suggest performing a full conflict test to identify the cause. Here’s how you can proceed:

    1. Temporarily activate the default theme (like Storefront).
    2. Disable all other plugins except for WooCommerce and PayPal Payments.
    3. Clear your site cache and browser cache, then test the checkout process again to see if the text still appears.

If the text is gone after these steps, re-enable your plugins one by one to find which one might be causing the issue.

If the issue persists after performing these steps, we suggest you contact us directly for further assistance as initially this thread was raised by other user, and we prefer to keep discusion outside.

We may need to examine your system report or logs to better understand what’s happening. You can open a ticket with our service desk. Here’s how you can request support:?Request Support. Please make sure to include the URL of this thread in your ticket for reference.

    Kind Regards,
