We’ve been using Revive Social / Revive Old Posts for a long time now but during the past months, unsure when this began, we have noticed that no featured images are being displayed in the Facebook posts. We submit a blog post and check the Facebook share box, and in Facebook, we only see the title and our message there. In Twitter/X and LinkedIn (another plugin), we see our featured image.

    Hi @brontobytes,

After further testing we found that there is no bug with current behavior, we rely on how Facebook can fetch the image so you can always check this tool:
    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/

To see if image can be retrieved. The safest way is to have og:image defined for your posts but it’s not always needed based on the tests made and can sometimes still be retrieved even when it’s not defined.

This is happening across all of our businesses though, where we use your plugin to submit to Facebook. Nothing new was done on our end. Perhaps a plugin update caused an incompatibility with your plugin? I cannot tell.

You first said that you confirm the bug. Did you actually confirm it as happening in a certain situation? This is confusing.

Edit: Using your link, I verified a blog post of ours where we have a featured image which didn’t show up on Facebook and I can see:

    og:image https://www.brontobytes.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/glasses-making-blurry-coding-clear.jpg

But it doesn’t show up on Facebook.

    Hi @brontobytes,

I apologize for any confusion caused by my previous reply.

We initially treated this as a bug. However, after further tests and investigations, our team concluded that this behavior is influenced by Facebook and does not fully depend on our plugin.

As my colleague described, testing the og:image parameter can provide more insights, but it is not guaranteed to always work, as we have also tested this approach.

I hope this clarifies the situation.

    Best regards,

    Andreea

Thank you for the information. To confirm, you’re also experiencing this, like us, but you’re saying that the issue is on Facebook’s side, not your plugin’s. We may have to test another plugin to see if that happens there too. But, thank you for the information.

Someone else replied as we received an email notification stating so, and yet it is not showing up here. This is his reply and this helps a lot. It should remain here as it’s a temporarily resolution until you fix this:

This iis a bug, and always has been in the plugin since we have used it – about 3 years roughly.

If your edit your post, click ‘share to social immediately’ and resave you will notice it works

So it work when resaving, but not when first creating the post. It’s very annoying and I can’t see how it’s a Facebook issue”

    Hey @brontobytes,

Feel free to try that way too.

After trying this workaround, the results are the same: the behavior is not consistent. Sometimes, the featured images are shown, and sometimes, they are not, as it depends on the link preview.

The comment must have been removed by the owner or by WP support due to its unconformity with the community.

I hhave a script that is a bit of a work around and now works for me.

For my script to work I need to have SEO Yoast installed. My function is triggered and when saving the post it calls a hook to set the featured images as the social image in Yoast.

Works a treat. Happy to distribute the code as a plugin if revive can’t or wont put this into their plugin.
