Featured Images Appear Blurry

Could you please link to the thumbnails you think are fine and the ones that you think are blurry? You can right click the thumbnails and select Copy Image Link to get their image URLs.

I ask because none of the thumbnails currently on the frontpage of https://knewsgr.com seem to look much worse than the rest to me. They all look around the same quality.

I see! Thanks for clarifying. It looks like you are using Optimole to process your images. Let’s look at one example:

• The front page thumbnail is – https://ml5uhqjiebyr.i.optimole.com/w:400/h:200/q:mauto/rt:fill/g:ce/ig:avif/https://knewsgr.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG_0682.jpg
• The image on the post is – https://ml5uhqjiebyr.i.optimole.com/w:816/h:458/q:mauto/ig:avif/https://knewsgr.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/IMG_0682.jpg
• If you look at the URLs above, you can see that your front-page thumbnail is being rendered at 400x200 pixels, and the image on your post is being rendered at 816x458 pixels.

Thus, it looks like Optimole is doing some cropping and resizing for you here, and if you noticed your front page images becoming blurry recently, the support forum for the Optimole WordPress plugin may be able to help.

I deactivated optimole and now the thumbnails on the first two posts look fine, but the rest remains blurred

I think I see what you mean. For the first two posts you created (the last two posts on the front page right now), the thumbnail images you have used are –

The two posts after that use these two images:

3) https://knewsgr.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/bts_jin_military_4_1244x700-400×200.jpeg

4) https://knewsgr.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/seventeen-unesco-400×200.jpg

If you click on these 4 files and view them individually, you will see that #1 and #2 are much higher resolution (i.e the image is larger) than the 400x200 pixel thumbnail images you are using for #3 and #3. Thus, when the larger images are scaled down for your frontpage, they look better / less blurry / higher quality.

If you edit the later posts to use larger variants of those images as featured images, their quality on the frontpage will improve as well.

It looks like wordpress is automatically scaling the pictures. Is there any way to disable this?

While WordPress does generate thumbnails for your images, these are generated as separate images. The original image you uploaded is not modified automatically.

When selecting a featured image for your post, you can select the original/large image you uploaded to the Media Library. When setting the featured image for a post, look under Attachment Details on the right and it will show the details of the image:

^ It should not say 400 by 200 pixels here. There should be a higher number as the image you want to set is the original one with the higher resolution. Look for the variant of your image with the higher resolution and insert that instead.
