Square Sync’s every product to the default category
-
WooCommerce / Square Sync’s every product to the default category in WooCommerce. Every product in Square has a category (only one). When I first imported products about a month ago all worked fine it seemed. Now every product is in the default category no matter what category it is in in Square. The categories are all in WooComerce but they are ignored on import and sync.

I get these two messages on Sync. What do they mean? I have no idea of what Product 100 is and no product number are shown in Square.
Square category with id () was not imported to your Store. Please run Import Products from Square settings.
Product #100 is excluded from sync as the product type “variation” is unsupported.
Hi @randem06
Thank you for reaching out — we’re happy to help!
From what I gather, product categories seemed to work as expected about a month ago, which recently is not the case — with every product syncing to the default category. Am I getting this?
What version of the plugin is currently activated at the store?

Could you please provide us with a screenshot of the messages, so that we can see what you are describing, along with another one of how the settings look (as exemplified here)?
Moreover, kindly go ahead with enabling the
Enable logging
option, in case it currently is not. (the last option towards the end of the screen, linked above)If you don’t already have a screenshot service installed, https://snipboard.io is a good option — for uploading it there, and sharing the link here afterward.
There is also a walkthrough guide here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/For sharing the logs with us here, feel free to use a service like our https://quickforget.com/.
Also, best to peruse the administrator experience documentation (linked here), in case a chance to do so did not come up already, where manual sync is covered along with other subjects.
I hope this is helpful! We look forward to your response. In the meantime, please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

The WooCommerce Square Plugin Version 4.6.3 is what I have. When it worked prior was because I had just setup the website for testing and connected Square and did an initial import of the products. All was fine then. Later after reorganizing the square products we did an import and all products were changed to uncategorized. I noticed that this was the default and change it to another category and re-imported and re-sync’d. All products change to the new default category.

The sync issues were resolved when I altered several products in Square. I still am not aware of which one caused the issue, but the error does not show now when I import.

Hi @randem06,
The sync issues were resolved when I altered several products in Square. I still am not aware of which one caused the issue, but the error does not show now when I import.
Thank you for the update. As I understand it, your products are now syncing properly into the right categories, correct?
I reviewed the System Status Report, product and setting screenshots as well as the logs you shared but didn’t find any red flags there. But if the issue happens again, kindly let us know, and we’ll help you troubleshoot it.
Thanks!
-OPAloha,
No, the categories are not syncing correctly. I just stated was that I don’t get the error message anymore. Two separate issues.
The pictures that I sent show that the Square products have different categories and the WooCommerce products all have the same category. All the Square categories have changed to the WooCommerce “Default” category.
I sent screenshots and logs.
Hello randem06,
Thank you for your reply.
I understand you are still facing the issue where product categories are not synced correct.
I reviewed the screenshots of Square Products and also the WooCommerce products.
At WooCommerce I only see the “Computer Repair” category and in Square, I see the “Stock”, “Computer Repair” and “Infection Protection” categories.Could you sort the products at WooCommerce alphabetically and share a screenshot?
I want to see the same set of products shown in the Square Products screenshot.
Starting with the “10 FT USB 2.0” product.I look forward to your reply. ??
Best regards.
Hi, I already sent a screenshot of the sorted WooCommerce Products listed in the post “Alphabetized WooCommerce Products:”
I will send it again https://quickforget.com/s/92645f52f31677d577008fde05f9b82eb6813e9f6f11c3bd
Thank you for reaching back, with further details on this @randem06 .
With your message here, I understand that after product edits were realized en masse on Square’s end an import was attempted to WooCommerce (after already having proceeded with a full sync), and this is where the issue started. Correct?
Square now supports more than one category per product. Nevertheless, when syncing/importing products from Square to WooCommerce (with Square as SOR), if a product belongs to multiple categories or sub-categories, only the first category assigned to it will be imported/synced. (Reference)
Helpful tip: You can’t bulk delete items in Square. You can however upload an empty item list to replace your current item inventory. Use the item export to get a CSV of your items. Delete everything but the first two rows (headers and 1 item). You can then re-upload that CSV. When you do, select the “Replace Item Library” option. (reference) Documentation linked here.
The idea here now is to export a CSV with the products (for backup reasons), clear the items in WooCommerce, and then import and sync. Thus, it will be like the first time.
I hope this is helpful! Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.
We will be happy to help you further.Hi, I don’t see how this procedure can be helpful, just a lot of extra work for no gain. This will not seemingly fix the issue just compound it. Even if I add a new item in Square it still goes into WooCommerce as the default category. All Square items only have one category. If I delete an Item in WooCommerce, empty the trash then re-sync. the exact same problem exists. Following your procedure will not accomplish much for every time it syncs the product category will be overwritten with the default WooCommerce one.
