• This is one of my favorite themes by my favorite theme designer ?? I use it as a parent theme on a thing I call SPLOT that allows people to create sites for public writing w/o access to the WP editor.

This site is being tested by some visually impaired users, and I am getting reports of lack of accessibility features for the site search, I am trying the WP Accessibility plugin to overcome the WordPress lack of adding form labels.

But I am curious, not being very expert in the issues at play, if the way the search field is hidden unto the magnifier icon is clicked, presents an accessibility challenge. Is the search form navigable by a screen reader if it is visually hidden?

    Thanks

    Hi @cogdog,

    I’m glad you like it!

The search toggle includes a visually hidden screen reader text that says “Show the search field”, so the search field should be screen reader accessible. It doesn’t trigger aria-events when clicked though, so it’s not as accessible as it could be.

Thanks for responding. I’m unsure if the people who notified me were able to get to the search through a screen reader. I’ve been trying a browser simulator and it provides a sobering experience of what it takes just to navigate a web page.
