• Hi all,

I’ve just installed Spam Karma, and whenever I go to the options page, it says

    Auto-updating Blacklist Table.

    Populating WP-Blacklist Table from: ‘https://www.unknowngenius.com/blog/blacklist/’

ERROR: Could not download from this Blacklist URL.https://www.unknowngenius.com/blog/blacklist/

Populated WP-Blacklist table: imported 0 values, skipped 0 duplicates.

    Error: did not import anythinga€|

It just sits checking, until eventually it time-outs, and says it couldn’t retrieve the blacklist from that (default) URL and that zero entries were updated. Furthermore, EVERY time I reload the Options page, it searches again – even if I try and delete the URL (leave it blank) AND untick the update checkbox.

One page suggested that my php config might not be able to connect to external sites. What options do I have then for obtaining the black list, or even just getting to the options page without having to go through this ringmarole every time?! Can I download the file myself and put it somewhere?

Any help greatly appreciated ?? I should mention that this has been posted on the Spam Karma blog comments but I can’t see any response, and it has been mentioned a little earlier on these boards, with no (useful) response. So I’m hoping that someone can help this time!

Well, in solving my own problem (partly) I downloaded the text file, and put it in my wp-content directory, and asked Spam Karma to source its blacklist from there (just gave it an absolute link to that file, which I called blacklist.txt).

Of course, this means I’ll have to MANUALLY update the blacklist file myself. I tried to tell Spam Karma not to automatically update every three days – but when you switch off that checkbox and update options, it switches back on again AND resets the number of days to 3.

If anyone can think of a better way of doing all this, or can explain where the problem came from in the first place, I’d love to hear from you ?? Otherwise, hopefully this helps at least a few people in a similar predicament.

I’m having no problems recovering the blacklist right now, though there are random short periods where I can’t. I’m assuming that Dr. Dave’s server may not be able to handle all of our blacklist requests and just blocks us out every now and then, or has a few hickups. Honestly, SK works just fine without the blacklist.
