When sending emails from a WP Forms contact form, the emails are no longer being received. Looking at the logs, this has been fine for the last couple of years but at the end of January it stopped working – no changes to the configuration have been made.

The log shows the following message:

Email Source: WPForms Lite Mailer: Other SMTP The following From address failed: emailaddress@mydomain : MAIL FROM command failed,Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable Sender address is not allowed. ,550,SMTP server error: MAIL FROM command failed Detail: Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable Sender address is not allowed. SMTP code: 550SMTP server error: MAIL FROM command failed Detail: Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable Sender address is not allowed. SMTP code: 550

Note: I have replaced the actual email address above with a generic one.

However, if I enter an email address using the site’s domain it comes through correctly and just rejects everything else.

Any ideas why this is the case?

As a workaround I have changed the sending email in WP Forms to a site based one, rather than the email the customer enters, which works. However, the result is that the contact email is not showing in the sender address – although in the past this has been fine. If I deactivate the SMTP plugin the email is received as expected (although goes to spam).

    I hope that helps

    Hi there @cufcmark59,

Thanks for reaching out and I do apologize for the delay. It sounds like there was a change, but not within WP Mail SMTP. Your mail host may have changed their configuration to only allow the From address to be one hosted on their server.

You could try switching mailers. For instance, Brevo allows you to send emails from any address and has a free tie available, which is very popular.

Check out this guide in our documentation. It walks through setting up a connection to Brevo, and includes screenshots of each step in the process: https://wpmailsmtp.com/docs/how-to-set-up-the-sendinblue-mailer-in-wp-mail-smtp/

I hope that helps! Have a great day!
