    Hi, community!
I am working on a website that does not allow me to install new plugins or to use the old plugins. I already did the basic checks:
    – testing the rights for the plugin folder – they are on 755
    – installing the twentytwentyfour theme
    – WP DEBUG DISPLAY is true

No result. I have been searching for hours but cannot find the bug. Has anybody an idea?

    That would be great!
I appreciate any help you can provide.
    Raphael

Here is the report that I received from the site:

What error do you encounter when you try to install plugins?

    Thread Starter rabox66

    (@rabox66)

Thanks for the answer. It says, that plugins cannot be installed and it cannot create the folder. But the plugins folder is on 755. So it should be writable.

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

755 should be fine, but is there an improvement under 777 instead?

    Thread Starter rabox66

    (@rabox66)

777 is nothing I would recommend. But nevertheless, it does not change anything.

The problem started when the website was installed on a hosting that was very limited and with horrible bad support. Basically the support only said that WP is a third party product and that they are not responsible for it.

Therefore I imported it into my own hosting. But even there the problem remains. I do not have this problem with other sites and I have aproximately 20 instalations running on that hosting.

I really have no glue what might cause that bug. I am glad for any ideas… Did anybody ever experiance something simillar?

    Thanks

Yeah, I’d never recommedn leaving it at that, just a way to rule-out permissions as the cause.

What errors are being reported at Tools > Site Health in your site’s Dashboard?

    Thread Starter rabox66

    (@rabox66)

The site health is “ggod”. They only say that the not needed themes should be removed and that I should add persistant cache. But I the cache information on other sites too, and they have no plugin problem.

    (@macmanx)

Are you able to install themes and upload media?

    Thread Starter rabox66

    (@rabox66)

Thanks for the question. I did not think of that.

Yes, I can upload themes and images.

What is the exact error message when trying to install a plugin? I only see “Cannot create folder” in WordPress core for FTP-based installations, which in itself would be unusual. Did you set the constant FS_METHOD in wp-config.php? If applicable. so:

    define('FS_METHOD', 'ftpext');

    If so, change that to

    define('FS_METHOD', 'direct');

    A few wild guesses:
    – Have you tried reinstalling WordPress-core, just in case some file needed happens to be broken? (There’s a button for that on the update page)
    – Have you tried both installing plugins from www.remarpro.com and uploading plugins via “add new plugin”?
    – Have you checked what PHP modules are installed on the server?

    amboutwe

    (@amboutwe)

In the Site Information, it confirms that the directory is not writeable.

    plugins: not writable

Looking above in the directory, it appears the plugin install path is different than the content directory.

    WP_CONTENT_DIR: /usr/www/users/gruenkmn/deutugal/wp-content
    WP_PLUGIN_DIR: /home/deutugal/public_html/wp-content/plugins

Perhaps you checked the plugin directory in the content folder which is not the folder WordPress is trying to write. Is that second path writable? If it’s incorrect, I’d guess something in the wp-config.php file set that path and fixing it would resolve the issue, too.

    Hi, everybody!
Thanks to your help I could detect the mistake. Here is the solution: The plugin Duplicator PRO, that I used for the migration left some code in the wp-config.php that caused the error. (It defined a wrong URL for the plugin folder) @amboutwe gave me the idea to check this file. Thanks!

About the bug: That is strange because I use that Plugin always for migration. But in that special case, I had to move the installation from a server that behaved more than strangely. Therefore I wanted to bring the site to my hosting to work there…

OK. But now it works. Thanks!
