Purchases not being tracked

I noticed that since the 23rd of January, Google Analytics is no longer tracking purchase events / conversions. Prior to this, tracking has worked fine for years. I have not recently adjusted any settings that may have caused this.

I understand that tracking was working as expected, until January 23.

As the date does not coincide with the release of the latest version of WooCommerce Google Analytics Integration, let’s see what else we can look further into.

To get an idea of how your site is configured, could you please share a copy of your site’s System Status, as exemplified here? Once you’ve done that, paste it here in your response.

Additionally, could you please provide us with screenshots, so that we can see what you are describing?

I have taken screenshots of GA4, which show the drop in conversions, and a screenshot of orders we have had in that time, but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to add them here. How do I do that? Alternatively I can send them to you via email

Nothing appears to immediately stand out, in the site’s System Status Report (SSR). I’m curious, if the issue persists, when temporarily disabling Quest Analytics: by Quest Marketing Ltd – 1.0.4, or otherwise. I’ve searched online, and could not find anything further.

I have taken screenshots of GA4, which show the drop in conversions, and a screenshot of orders we have had in that time, but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to add them here. How do I do that?

Thanks Pepe, and apologies for the delay in coming back to you. I have been trying to resolve this with a developer, but to no avail!

The Quest Analytics plug-in is just for connecting the site to GA4, using the Gtag. It doesn’t do event measurement – that is all done through the WooCoomerce GA4 Integration plug-in, so the issue must be to do with this..

Interestingly, I ran a test purchase a few days ago, and that purchase is showing up in our Analytics report. But no other purchases are. You can see in the below screenshot the drop off in purchases on the 23rd, and my one purchase last week:

This screenshot shows that event tracking for add_to_cart is working fine. All other tracking is working fine other than purchases (the most important one!). I wonder if there is an issue with the payment gateway perhaps?

Just to confirm, you made a test purchase on your website and it is showing all the relevant events including the Purchase event at Google Analytics.
Meanwhile, the purchases made by the customers do not show the Purchase event but show other events like Add to cart.

Could you please tell me if you were logged into the WordPress dashboard when you made a purchase? I am asking this because logged-in users bypass the cache and do not see the cached website.

If you were logged in, then could try to make a test purchase again without logging into the website. Or even better, use a different device to simulate a real customer scenario.

Also, let me know which solutions you have already tried with your developer. This will allow me to narrow down the next steps that will help us in resolving this strange behavior of the website.

Hi, yes that is all correct. I have just run another test purchase and again the purchase event is firing in tag assistant and GA4 debug view:

The developer and I have looked into various GTM accounts and have run a bunch of test purchases, but can’t figure this one out. Super frustrating.

Can you please head over to WooCommerce → Status → Tools, and do the following:

WooCommerce transients – Clear
Expired transients – Clear
Clear template cache – Clear
Capabilities – Reset Capabilities
Clear customer sessions -Clear

And then try a test order without being logged in to see if the issue persists?

The only conversions I can see in Analytics are the test purchases I have done in GTM. So I will need to wait a few days and check to see if regular users purchases are coming through. Otherwise I might have to switch plug-ins or set this up manually.

In my case it’s not even recording test purchases. we’re having purchases regularly but analytics only shows us add to cart and form start events. (not purchases).

I understand the plugin is tracking your purchases only. Would you be able to try doing a test purchase without being logged in to check if the issue persists?

If it does, the next step would be to run a conflict test to see if something external is interfering.

To test, you’ll first want to change the theme on your site to Storefront, then check to see if the issue is still present. If that resolves the issue, you’ll want to get in touch with your theme’s developer and see if they have an update or fix for you.

If changing the theme doesn’t help, you’ll want to deactivate all plugins except for WooCommerce and take a look. If that fixes the problem, re-enable the other plugins one by one (gradually), checking after each, to see where the issue is coming from.

— Be sure you have a good backup in place of your full site and database. You can ask your host for backup functionality or you can consider using a service like Jetpack. If something goes wrong, you will be able to restore it.

— Also, you can consider using a plugin like Health Check & Troubleshooting. This is a plugin developed by the WordPress community and it is helpful to disable plugins without affecting your current site visitors.

— It is important to consider as well a staging functionality in case you would not like to touch your production site (you can ask your host if they offer this service), or you can use WP Staging for quickly spinning up a new test site.

Has there been any resolution here. My analytics as well is tracking everything except purchases. Nothing is tracking through Google ads although everything is verifies installed correctly.

By any chance, are you using the custom order received page or the default one? Do you have any cache plugins in use? Did you test using the Google Tag Assistant to see whether the purchase event is being tracked? For better assistance, can you share the following:

• Your site’s system status reports: WooCommerce > Status.
• Screenshot of your Google Analytics for WooCommerce plugin.
• Screenshot of your key events setting in Google Analytics.
• Also, are you using Google Analytics 4 or Universal Analytics?
