Can i modified / update an existing plugin !

  • There is a wordpress plugin which the wordpress site says is compatible upto 2.8 and it seems to work with wp 3.01

    My question is , can i update , add extra future and give a new name to the plugin, also give a link back to the original plugin url on the wordpress ! and share it with u guys on the wordpress platform?

    Do i need to take permission from the plugin creator ?

    I dont understand much about this gpl licence and terms and condition!

  • You are free to modify and redistribute any GPL plugin but it’s considered polite to contact the original author first and attribute the original plugin/developer in your modified version.
