Comments in Recent Posts

I’m using the “Recent Posts” plugin and it works great. I get the title of my post and the exerpt. I would like to be able to see how many comments were left for each post. Is there a way to add this to the plugin?

I’ve played with it myself and can’t get it to work and I haven’t found anything by searching.
