Generate missing sizes only?

  • Hello!

    I’ve got a setup that uses Custom Image Sizes by 99 Robots to create sizes, Crop-Thumbnails so that we can modify them, and EWWW Image Optimizer to optimize the files. However, there are a few discrepancies where some older articles don’t have a certain file size created and while I could use the Crop-Thumbnails plugin to generate them individually, I was looking for a solution that could automatically loop through the images in the library and generate just the missing sizes without affecting the existing ones (and hopefully EWWW Image Optimizer would pick up on the size being newly created and optimize it automatically too).

    There’s over 8k items in the media library and 20 registered sizes, so I imagine it might need to be done in batches since one long script might time out.

    I know it’s not a feature available in your plugin now, but do you think it might be added? If not, I’ll figure something else out. Thanks!

    Hi Tessa,

    Sorry for the delay in responding!

    As you mention there isn’t really anything in currently, and I’m not sure what might be added. We adopted this plugin as we found it useful and it had be mostly abandoned. So right now we’re just in “maintain” mode, but I appreciate the idea!

    That having been said, and I apologize if I’m missing a step here, but could you select the sizes you want generated in the Resizes tab of EWWW IO and then kick off a Force Regenerate Thumbnails? FRT deletes all of the thumbnails before regenerating them and it will only build the ones that you select in EWWW (well, I guess I mean the ones you don’t select, since the checkbox is for “Deactivate Creation”). It’s kind of a heavy way to do it, but it would get where you wanted in the end I think.

    Thanks for responding! And no need to apologize, you’re a human ?? Also, thank you for adopting it! I’ve adopted some too and I totally understand!

    I did suggest that to my supervisor and he was like, “I don’t want to do that,” so I see myself writing a looping script in the near future lol
