Twenty Twenty-Four is the default theme for WordPress, launched alongside version 6.4 in November 2023. A block theme designed to take full advantage of full site editing capabilities, particularly the opportunities offered by patterns. Create new pages in a matter of moments by constructing them from the wide range of patterns that come bundled with the theme.

Whether you’re new to full site editing or want to explore the theme more, here are some resources to help you get going:

What to watch for when switching to Twenty Twenty Four

    • Twenty Twenty-Four is a Block Theme which means it utilises the Site Editor for editing the theme itself and content on your Home or Index pages. If your site user ‘Show latest posts’ as the Reading Setting you’ll be able to edit the homepage content by going to Appearance > Editor.
    • If you’re switching from another block theme (like Twenty Twenty-Three) any customizations you made to templates (like your Home template) won’t be brought over to the new theme. The best way to avoide this is to copy everything from your template into a page and set this page as your home page in General -> Reading Settings to preserve the content.

    FAQ

How do I add custom CSS to Twenty Twenty-Four?

It’s possible to many modifications to Twenty Twenty-Four without needing custom CSS, by using the Site Editor, and changing block settings such as border, margin, padding, and colour.

If you find yourself needing to make CSS tweaks – for example, to tweak the look of content output by a plugin – you can add custom CSS code in the Styles settings.

How can I substantially modify Twenty Twenty-Four?

If you need to make structural changes in Twenty Twenty-Four, and custom CSS isn’t enough, you have a few options, such as creating a child theme or creating your own version of the theme (aka “forking” the theme). With Full Site Editing, you can even make changes through the Site Editor and then export a copy of the theme with those modifications included.

The Create Block Theme plugin streamlines all of those tasks – including making a child theme, which is a different process for block themes than classic ones.
