No matter what category I click at the in the Category widget page all categories show on the category page. I click the category “Event” and I see posts for Event as well as all other post in the blog.

  • Is this the default widget?
Does this happen on all sites in the network?
Are you running any kind of plugin at all that may affect this?
Can I get a link to your site? ??

Yes it is the default and I am using it in the footer.

Yes it does happen on all sites in the network.

I am not sure if I am running a plugin that would affect it. (I’m a newbie with wordpress, so I am not that familiar yet.) Is there any way to be able to see if one is affecting the other?

The plugins that I am using on the site are:
    AddToAny: Share/Bookmark/Email Button
    Akismet
    Author Image
    Executable PHP widget
    Facebook Like
    Flickr Photo Album
    Ozh’ Admin Drop Down Menu
    Post-Plugin Library

Turn off all the plguins. Switch to the default theme.

the widget should still be in place – or really, just check an Posted in X category” link.

If that works, it’s either your theme or any one of those plugins.

Sorry,I don’t understand what this means. What do I need to do?

Go look at your blog. see the post? Right under the post it says in your old theme “Posted in uncategorized”.

    Click it.

Ok. (Thanks for the clarification in easy speak for me.:) ) I turned off all plugins on the site and clicked the link and the “Posted in” works the same way. I was using the TwentyTen as my guide and just made changes to it.

Do you have any other suggestions?

I was using the TwentyTen as my guide and just made changes to it.

You changed the actual TwentyTen theme? If so, that will all get overwritten on an upgrade.

    Ok…that isn’t good. ??

I created a global style sheet and added it to muplugins. I made changes to that. I didn’t make any changes to the actual styles. But yes, I did change the files in the folders. Such as header.php, loop.php, and functions.php. That wasn’t the way I should do it? How can I change it so that it won’t be changed on upgrade? Please point me in the right direction.

How was I supposed to make changes without changing the theme files?

Thanks to you both for the information. It would have been bad if the theme was upgraded and I lost everything. Thanks so much.

I will create the theme as a child theme and then hopefully my initial problem will be fixed. Otherwise I guess I will be back.

Also if you made changes to loop.php it’s quite possible that’s why the categories weren’t being displayed correctly.

    Ok. Thanks.

Ok. So I assume that if I download 3.0 again, that will restore the theme to it’s original state. Is that a correct assumption? Then I copy in any files that I made changes to under the child-theme and that should override the Parent-theme files? There are no files that I shouldn’t copy into the child theme? I know that I have to wait to copy the Loop because that is where my initial issue with the categories started. I just want to make sure I can copy the rest of my changes.

    Yes.

Yes but … better to make a new folder for your child theme, copy the changed files into THERE, and make your style.css point back to parent.

THEN download a new version of 3.0 ?? Thus you don’t break your theme midstream.

    Makes sense. Thanks!
