• I created a site, but it is not listed as a page. I can’t add it as it doesn’t show up in any list I can find. I can edit the site, but it also seems to be having an issue showing up in Google searches, so I would like to have it as a page. Is there a way to do this without recreating the site from scratch as a page? This is my first effort at creating a website with WP, so far not really fun.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Which page do you mean specifically? If you can edit it, you can certainly call it up via the frontend. What is the URL of the page in the frontend?

    website is https://tennesseestarryskies.org.

When I log on via the website/admin, I can edit it. But it is nowhere in the list of my pages. I have only a sample page and a draft privacy policy page.

Ah, you mean the home page. You set it as a blog page in the WordPress settings. You can find the setting for this under Settings > Reading. It is described in more detail here:

    Settings Reading Screen

Currently, your blog posts are displayed there via the blog template. If you want to turn the homepage into a page, create a completely new page, fill it with the content you want and then change the setting for the homepage under Settings > Reading so that the page you created is the homepage.

I can’t see that. I have a blog post, it’s linked from the website. That’s what is under blog posts. I can’t see anything under the reading settings that references what the page is. Nor anywhere it would say that it was a blog template?

I was hoping to avoid having to completely recreate the page. I don’t understand how I followed down creating a site and ended up here.

Looking at some of the “lets get started” stuff, there is a constant use of the word “site” not meaning “website.” This is confusing to say the least.

I’ve usually done my own website, was hoping to an easy way to create something that could be transferred. I’ll keep looking, this does not appear to be that. I don’t need a blog.

What settings do you see under Settings > Reading? You are also welcome to provide them as a screenshot: https://imgur.com

    “Your homepage displays

o Your latest posts (this is checked, don’t know what effect this has since it isn’t the website) Although apparently my one blog post is a “sample page.”

o A static page (the choices on the dropdown are both “sample page” (again, neither of which are being used as the website)” So I guess I could have my one blog post as a homepage?

What is the page called that appears as what would normally be the index page for a website? For all I know, I am using a sample page and just have no way to see that.

I would cheerfully do a screenshot, but am not going to bother joining yet another online place just to post a picture using a url. I guess I get the idea of using WordPress for this forum, but I’ve never been asked to choose a block in a forum before.

As near as I can guess, then, my homepage is not a page.

Exactly. Your homepage is an overview of your last posts. It is not a page.

If you want to have a page as your homepage, create it under Pages and fill it with the content you want your visitors to see on the homepage. Then select it as the homepage in the above setting.

The only thing on my homepage that has anything to do with posts is a link. Otherwise it is all other content, that was kind of a pain to get arranged. So it makes sense to someone that a homepage can be something other than a page, and I can’t just reclassify it. Well, this was a fun exercise, we’ll redo the work as something editable this time. Thanks for the advice, though.

Coming back to this after a month on the road, I am still curious as to why my homepage does not show up under posts. I can’t see it anywhere on the Dashboard other that I can access through “Appearance” and then “editor.” The Reading settings has nothing about the homepage, none of the choices are that. What then is a homepage?

What is says in the editor:

    “Home

Displays posts on the homepage, or on the Posts page if a static homepage is set.”

When I am in the editor, all the pages that show up under pages on dashboard show up, plus one labeled “home.” How is this not then a page in Dashboard? I am certainly confused.

Have you looked at the one I suggested above?

If you want to have a page as your homepage, create it under Pages and fill it with the content you want your visitors to see on the homepage. Then select it as the homepage in the above setting.

Yes. I am just trying to understand what I *did* create. Since I deleted the “sample” page (never published), nothing shows up on the Reading screen except how many blog posts should show up. No choice on static homepage.

    threadi

    (@threadi)

If you select Static Page, you must specify both the actual homepage and a page on which the blog posts are listed. Both must be pages that you create under Pages. If you do not currently have any pages, nothing is available for selection here. You must therefore first create a page in order to be able to select it under Homepage.

If this is still unclear, you can also provide a screenshot of what you see here. You can upload it here, for example: https://imgur.com/

I was specifically trying out wordpress to see if the claim of easy to use was true. I followed directions on how to create a homepage. I still don’t really know what I created. What is clear is that the *first* instruction should have been to create a page. So now what I have is neither a post nor a page. That is what is unclear, and apparently has no answer. I’ll probably get more spam for signing up for a site I don’t use, but hopefully this link shows both my reading settings page and what I see on the sidebar when I go to appearance and editor. It says “pages” and “home.” https://imgur.com/a/wsSWuFU
