"Trimming" Featured Images

I am using featured images within a photoblog theme. Instead of having the largest dimension on each thumbnail image reduced to fit within the max allowable window, I would like each thumbnail to be “trimmed” so that there is no white space next to the images/all the thumbnail images are the same dimensions. How can I do this?
