I updated my site with WP6.3 and some plugins earlier today. Then I discovered an error on the site related to a Envira gallery plugin and was forced to restore. I always take a Duplicator backup before any updates of course so I could just use this backup created 10 min before.

After restore I discovered that alla the special characters in the Swedish language (???) was replaced with junk characters in the whole site. I then tried to restore to a backup from previous update in May (4 months ago) but the same error still remained.

I was able to climb out of this shit by using my hosting providers daily SQL dump file from yesterday, then the Swedish characters returned.

What could possibly gone wrong? I can recreate the error so there is some error in my Duplicator packages but I cannot find any clues in my settings.

    Hi @wsoftware ,

Thanks for reaching out to Duplicator Support.

This issue is related to the database charset and collation.

You need to select the proper charset and collation during the backup restoration.

This screenshot shows how to select the charset and collation during the backup restoration.

Note: To change the Charset and Collation, you need to enable the advanced mode in the first step of the installer from the top right of the page, proceed until step 2 and you will be able to change the charset and collation

    Thanks!

Thanks for reply, I will try.

Has there been a change of default settings in recently updates or why have this problem started now?

    Hi?@wsoftware?,

This is the standard behavior of Duplicator and is not indicative of an issue with the plugin itself. The challenge arises from migrating between databases with differing charset and collation settings, leading to migration difficulties.

Ok, I have to try to see if I can avoid this problem using some other charset on backup/restore then.

But I only did a backup and a restore from the same database, on the same site and on the same hosting provider. Maybe a half hour in between backup/restore and did only update WP and some plugins. I have done exactly the same backup-update-restore process before summer with no problems so I suspected some change in your default settings.

    Hi @wsoftware ,

I’m closing this support topic for inactivity. Please don’t hesitate to contact us in a Support Topic if you need any help with Duplicator.

    Thanks!

I had the same problem and kept reading about changing the encoding in the advanced section but as far as I can tell, this option is only available in the Pro version of Duplicator. This points to something having been changed in the defaults and, as a result, in my case at least, Duplicator has become unusable.

Such a shame. It is the best plugin of its kind out there.
