      • – – Software (software-2)
        • – – – Audio (audio-2)
        • – – – Video (video-2)

This is example of nested categories, in brackets is slug.
    Importer will make mess.
Randomly merging categories with same names.
For example, once imported, it will merge Software category into one and put Phones as parent.
It will merge Audio and put it in Phones or Computers Software subcategory.

What I have to do is to go and manually ad random words for same category names, import, and then go 1 by 1 to restore old names.

  • I suspect this could be coming from a limitation in WordPress core itself. Have you take a look at 43271 and 30379? I think they might be related to the issue you are describing.

    Hi, Alvaro.

I do not think it is the case.

First one is about multilanguage and second one is about same category name of the same parent.

Second one is pretty normal behaviour, did not read about WPML much.

In my case, it is messing parents, and it does it randomly.

If I have parent A and parent B, and both of them have children as child A and child B, importer will randomly merge children A or children B, and will not merge children A or children B.

    Scenarios are like…

After import of these, you have parent A with child A and child B, and you have parent B with only child A, all posts of child B of a parent B are moved to child B of a parent A, or something like that.

Thank you for the additional details, @mllapan.

I did a quick test and I also noticed that the hierarchical structure was lost after the import but not the other issues.

Would you be able to share the XML you are using in your case to take a closer look and replicate the rest of what you describe?

    Thank you!

I am not sure if I still have it on PC, I will check, if it’s there I ‘ll post.

I had 2500 posts, it might be the case of too many posts.

I just know that it worked after I renamed categories.

Anyway, I think plugin should be fixed to follow slugs instead of names, that would sort it out. It’s hard work to rename, export, import, and then rename again.

I have opened a bug report here. Please feel free to add to it (or even open a separate one if this does not match the issue you noticed).
