Static page with recent post floated in a div

Is there an easy way to float a div that contains your most recent post, and then wrap the rest of the page around that floated DIV?

I have setup a site with a static home page and I am using the TPG Get Posts plugin to add the most recent post to my static home page. However, I would like to have just an excerpt from my home page on the left side of the page and some static content on the rest of the page. I have tried creating a DIV but the posts don’t appear inside the DIV. I have tried creating a table but the post won’t valign to the top.
