excerpts don’t show at all

I can’t find a setting on wordpress, elementor (free), or within the post grid add-on (free) that makes my post excerpts show in any browser. The featured photo, metadata and “read more” button work fine. I’ve tried changing the grid layout, excerpt type and limit, custom excerpt in wordpress posts, blank excerpt field to automatically load some of the text, and searching the internet for help. No luck. I am using the oceanwp theme, which doesn’t seem to have any blog settings. Should I change themes? What am I doing wrong?
