need help with multi content block plug-in. I'm new

I successfully installed the plug-in through WP plug-ins. I put the <?php the_block(‘blockname’); ?> code at the bottom of pages.php
I can open the page I want to add an additional block to and see that I have the block name there. But when I add and text/content, nothing shows up on my site–whether I do a preview or actually update the site. Then, when I go back to the page edit, I can still see the block name but whatever content I added is gone.

BTW, I do want the additional blocks on my pages, not in the loop.
I thought it would work just adding that one line of code. Do I need to add something else somewhere else?
I appreciate any guidance. I’ve searched for an answer and couldn’t find one anywhere.
