This might sound like a really silly question but… if I do a clean install of WP (3.0.1) in a new hosting directory (LAMP stack), will I be able to take my WP 2.9.2 files (exported) and database and import them into the 3.0.1 installation?

Has anybody done this successfully from a clean install as described?

Thank you so much in advance for your responses.

  • Is this a db backup from a 2.9.2 install or a WP export file?

Hi, esmi. I’ve seen numerous posts from you–you’re a very helpful person!

The db would be an export of our current WP MySQL db. I would also do an export of the actual WordPress files through the WP Tools section.

I did a same-version to same-version install like this a long while back, but now we’re going with a new hosting company and I figure I might as well upgrade to 3.0.1 in the move.

If you try and import a 2.9 sql dump into a 3.0.1 db, you’ll eventually hit problems, There were database changes between 2.9 and 3.0. Far better to install 2.9.2, import the sql and then upgrade to 3.0.1. It will only add about 2 mins onto your install task with the 1-click upgrade option.

    Hi, esmi,

Thanks for the tip. I figured that might be the route I’d have to go. I guess all things considered, I’ve got nothing to lose since this will be a clean install and the old (existing) site will still be up and running while I get the new one configured.

    Thanks for your advice!
