When I am using importer, I have issues with links and images. It seems that somewhere in the export/import process the links and images are getting messed up.

For example, in one of my templates that I exported, my link was:

    https://example.com/dating-apps

However, after exporting then importing, the link became broken like this: https://example.com/%22https://example.com/dating-apps//%22

Further for images, the images are broken – I assume also a link issue.

I suspect this issue is that links should be escaped somehow but then when I import back there’s likely a lot of manual work to revert the links. In that case, I might as well wait until I have imported pages back to fix links.

Does anyone know how to solve this? It would greatly help me to save time!

  • Every so often it helps, especially with links, to go to ‘Settings > Permalinks and click on the save button twice. (I am aware that it sounds a bit counterintuitive) Try it.

Hey Birgit, this wasn’t helpful at all. I don’t think it relates to my question unless you can explain it better. Just saving permalinks does effectively nothing for what my issue is. Thanks though

It would be great to know if the issue is happening during export or import. Can you confirm if the URLs are correct in the export file?

Either way, I would start by figuring out if this is an issue with WordPress core or one introduced by a theme or plugin. You can do that by disabling all of the plugins and activating one of the core themes before running the export/import process again.

If it’s fine with no plugins running and a default theme, you can start to add them back in one at a time to determine the culprit. If the issue still exists with no plugins and a default theme, we’ll need to dive into it deeper.
