• Hi, i want to use the default WordPress 6.2 editor and i am now using Elementor Pro. Elementor lets me create a post template per category but i cannot find a way to do this with the 6.2 editor. Is this even possible? Or should i be using a dedicated plugin even in 6.2? Thanks!

  • I think you should be able to create templates for each category using the following steps:

Hi thanks! I did not realize that. I tried it that way and i can create a category template, but after that i cannot select that template for use within a post. The new template is just not there to select in the Edit screen. From there i can create a new template though as well that i can use from then also for other posts. Strange…

Also, there is no way of automatically assigning category templates to posts in a certain category? You always have to select it manually?

My apologies, the process I showed creates a Category archive page template, not a template for an individual item in a category, so it doesn’t show as selectable for a page/post, but will show when you go to a category list url, eg. https://mysite.com/category/books/

If working from the site editor I think what you actually need to do is add a new custom template for each category as below:

I couldn’t see a way to automatically assign a template to a category via the editor, but it is not any area I am overly familiar with. ?? someone else has some ideas.

Hi, many thanks! I realized indeed that it would create a category archive template. Your suggestion allowed me to create one for posts in a certain category but it still is a manual process while it was automatic with Elementor. Maybe there is a plugin that can do that. I’ll do a search but thanks for the suggestion!
