The ERROR Failed to retrieve stored webhook data. may be related to a potentially missing option key in your database. Did you possibly migrate this site at any point, e.g. from staging to production?

As a first measure, I suggest resubscribing your webhooks as explained here.

If that results in an error, or it doesn’t help, I suggest disconnecting and reconnecting your PayPal account. This will set up a new REST application with the webhooks and recreate the option, which can often resolve webhook-related issues.

The site was not migrated at any point from staging to production.

Resubscribing resulted in an error, so then I disconnected & reconnected the Paypal account. Then I resubscribed again which was successful. Then I clicked on the webhook simulation button, and it said “The webhook was received successfully.” However, that action generated this in the log: “ERROR Webhook verification failed.” Is that a false message that I can ignore? The full log is pasted below.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have seen this error before, but I am not sure if we can do something about it, as the plugin just re-sends the webhook data and headers to PayPal.

I suggest contacting the PayPal Merchant Technical Support with your log. Most often, the Debug ID helps the MTS to find the correct event in their system, and they can usually see more than what is logged from the plugin.

Errors are rarely reassuring, so please let us know when you hear back from the MTS, as we are interested in their point of view. Thanks!

I contacted PayPal support and this issue is now fixed. Their reply is pasted below.

“Checking the attached log file and our webhook logs, I see that it was fired from PayPal in 2023-03-22 at 10:24:51, it didn’t get a response from the webhook receiver, so it has a fail error attached.

Checking the more recent webhooks, starting on 2023-03-22 at 13:26:12, they show as successfully delivered, that leads me to believe that resetting the connection and resubscribing the webhooks fixed the issue.”

It does not sound like they actually did anything though. The error message did occur even after I reconnected & resubscribed. Maybe it took a while for my action to “propagate”, who knows.
