Problem with SCA: card_error_authentication_required

    Hi,

    I have a problem, that is happening with others too, as I see for example in this topic:

    I have the same issue, the error is displayed for some users. I tested with my cards and I have a card, that is working well, but the other gets the same error message without displaying the SCA popup window.

    Could you make sure everything is updated to the latest version, as a first step, and see if the issue persists, please?

    After investigating the site’s System Status Report (SSR), I see that WooCommerce Subscriptions: írta WooCommerce – 4.8.1, for example, has version 4.9.1 available at the moment.

    After the update my test purchase was successful. Now it gives the same problem. Tried with 3 credit cards, one of them had the mentioned problem, the other two cards worked as expected.

    I have only subscriptions on my site. It has a 1 month trial also, so first “payment” is 0 HUF.

    There are several reasons, it appears that this is related to the customer’s card and not the plugin.

    For example, It’s important to know that some banks now require authentication when the purchase amount is over 20 EUR, and users must confirm the purchase via a bank app or through an OTP.

    Other reasons could be:
    – The Bank has applied a spent limit or disabled certain features like recurring payments on the card.
    – The 3D secure workflow is not completed; the verification popups may not be showing because of installed browser extensions (e.g. and Ad blocker, a firewall, etc.).

    You can ask your customer to try again using a different browser or device, if that doesn’t work for them, please ask them to try a different card or to contact their Bank or card issuer company to ensure recurring payments are enabled on their card.

    I am talking about a problem with single orders or renewals orders. In our case it has been going on since 2020 (arrival of the 3ds) with Stripe. We exchanged with your team at the time and even with Stripe itself.

    Some of our customers don’t see the 3ds window open so it makes the customer wait until it fails (because of the timeout on the 3ds check) or the customer goes back by himself.

    It can happen 2/3 times per day.

    I have never been able to reproduce it on a test environment. Maybe a clue would be that a client who encounters this problem could bring up their development console on their browser to see if a JS error would be present.


    Indeed I also thought of an ad or popup blocker but when it is too redundant and that it also affects older people (who do not necessarily think of installing this on their browser) I have doubts.

    Could there be asynptomatic communication errors between our server and Stripe’s server?

    I’d suggest enabling the debug mode, it can be found at WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > stripe > settings > advanced settings > Log error messages. Be sure Debug Mode / Log error messages is selected. That will help to troubleshoot your site once the issue is present.

    @neoseeyou I switched to another plugin, that is working perfectly, without any problem with the same cards and same purchase amount. So I’m sure it is related to the plugin, not to the cards.
