• I recently changed my site to the Twenty Twenty Three Theme. I used the Site Editor to try and change the Appearance of my site. I went into the Styles editor and tried to change the color scheme of my site to Sherbert. Every time I try to save I get the error “Saving failed.”

I have tried the suggestions on this post. When I check my error logs, I see multiple errors that seem to indicate that whenever I’ve tried to change the global styles on my website, it reads as an attack on my database.

This is where I’ve hit the limit of my knowledge. Can anyone help?

I was able to activate sherbert variation on 2023 theme (no plugins active, version 6.1.1, php 8.1.9)

Share the “database attack: error details for your situation with the 2023 theme support team and request guidance from the team most familiar (including the PHP version and WordPress version you are using)

I googled the error code I was receiving in my logs:

Access denied with code 418 (phase 2)

It’s coming from my hosts (DreamHost). I disabled their mod_security firewall and that seems to have down the trick. See their documentation here.

I’m going to contact them first to let them know about the issue and see what they say. It would probably be a good idea to let the Twenty Twenty Three forums know as well, even though it’s unclear whether it’s something to do with the theme.

I’ll update this thread with any further info as it comes.

Hi, @marynotari. I haven’t dug into the logs yet, but I’m receiving the same “Saving failed” error when trying to adjust a style in the Site Editor, and I’m also on DreamHost. Were you able to resolve this?

I’m having the same problem. Using DreamHost, I can’t get a style variation to save with that theme.

@writerdreamer I followed the link to the mod_security documentation up thread and disabled it, and was then able to save the style change.

I tried to disable mod_security on the website that was failing and still wasn’t able to save a new style. I contacted DreamHost support and got this reply:

I reviewed our error logs and noticed multiple ModSecurity records. Those were referring to your IP <x>. I adjusted some ModSecurity rules on the server and ran Apache config to make sure the changes are updated. May I ask you to try editing your website once again?

That worked, and I was able to save, and it seems like I’m now able to save after re-enabling mod_security. I’m not sure if the changes DreamHost made will help everyone or if the rules were specific to my site (although that seems weird?).

I’ve also been having this issue, and it never occurred to me that Dreamhost (which I use) was the problem. I’m thinking the changes made for @writerdreamer might have been specific to their account. I might have to contact Dreamhost myself to get this fixed.

Hopefully if enough people complain they will just fix it. ?? I’m glad to help though!

Thank you, @writerdreamer ! I’ve been tearing my hair out over this same problem, and I finally found this thread. Evidently DreamHost’s fix for you was just for you, and I’ll have to contact them to have them fix the settings on my VPS as well, so that I can continue working on my site redesign (which I’ve been putting off for years, but have to do now that DreamHost is about to start charging accounts for using PHP 7.4. The theme I used as a basis many years ago causes the site admin login to fail if I update to PHP 8.x)

Happy to help @eharris ! I wouldn’t have found the solution without this forum.

Had same issue using Twenty Twenty-Four theme. Was able to solve by turning off Dreamhost firewall per @marynotari ‘s 2/15/23 message in this thread saying, “…?See their documentation?here.”

Thanks for the solution, Mary and y’all!

Thank you so much for helping with this wonderful post.

Thank you for sharing your experience with activating the Sherbert variation on the 2023 theme. As requested, I will share the database attack error details with the 2023 theme support team and request guidance from the team most familiar with my situation. I will make sure to include the PHP version and WordPress version that I am using. Thank you for providing the link to the support team. I appreciate your help in resolving this issue.
